Choosing a leash for your dog can be a daunting task when you look at all of the possibilities out there. There are so many kinds of leashes to choose from. How do you know which one is best for you and your dog?
Generally the best type of leash for your dog depends on what type of dog you have and what you are doing with your dog. There are nylon, cotton, leather, flexi (or extendable) and many other varieties of leashes discover here. Certain leashes are better for training and walking and others are better for giving your dog and opportunity to run. Leashes that are best for training and walking are leather or cotton. Most trainers want the leash to be a minimum of six feet long so that you can be close to the dog without holding a lot of leash or can get a little distance when practicing certain exercises. Rolled nylon is also acceptable because it does not usually hurt your hands and doesn't have the potential to hurt your dog like a sharp nylon leash can. Most often leather and cotton are the gentlest to your hands and your dog's underside. These are also strong enough to handle larger dogs. The thickness of the leash depends upon the size and strength of your dog, as well as your comfort (generally the size of your hands). Most people with smaller hands (quite often women) tend to prefer a leash that is not too thick, whereas people with larger hands (often men) like a leash to be a bit thicker. The size of the dog will also determine the thickness of the leash. For example, you would not want to use a leash that is one inch thick for a very small dog. That would be cumbersome for the dog! Flexi-leashes or extendable leashes extend when the dog pulls. This can be counterproductive for training and normal walking purposes, but can be good for quick potty breaks or letting your dog run around. Flexi-leashes can also be dangerous as they can snap, or break, when too much pressure is put on them. If you are going to use a flexi-leash be aware of what size dog it is meant for - you may want to get one meant for a dog that is larger than your own dog just to be safe. So, make sure you know what you want the leash for and know your own dog's strength before you choose a leash. When in doubt, consult a trainer or vet for their opinion. Good luck and happy leash hunting!
